Team Coast Guard participated in the Washington D.C. Fire Department Burn Foundation Tournament at the Gardens Ice House in Laurel, MD from 14-16 April. The tournament featured 6 divisions with 25 military, police, fire, and first responder hockey teams represented. Organized by the D.C. Fire Department, the tournament supports the D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation, a non-profit focused on assisting in the recovery and rehabilitation of injured firefighters and burn patients in the D.C. Metropolitan Area.
After dropping the first game of the tournament 7-3 to the Baltimore Sentinels, the Coast Guard team regrouped and reeled off two wins against the Prince George's County Fire Department and the Fairfax County Fire Department by scores of 8-1 and 6-1. The two wins placed the team into the final for their division and in a rematch against the Baltimore Sentinels. After falling behind early 1-0, Coast Guard scored three unanswered goals and led 3-1 in a tightly contested game after two periods. The third period saw the Coast Guard team pull away with three more goals, winning the championship with a convincing 6-1 victory.
Congratulations to the Coast Guard team and thanks to everyone who came out for the tournament. Also, special thank you to the Washington D.C. Fire Department for organizing an excellent tournament in support of a great cause.
