The movie Veer Savarkar was produced by Savarkar Darshan Prathisthan, under the president-ship of Sudhir Phadke, who also composed music for it. It was directed by Ved Rahi, who also wrote the script. The movie stars Shailendra Gaur as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Pankaj Berry as Madan Lal Dhingra, Tom Alter as Reginald Craddock, Hemant Birje as Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, Rohitash Gaud as Narayan Rao Savarkar, and Ankita Lokhande as Mai Savarkar. The movie was released on 16 November 2001 in Mumbai, New Delhi, Nagpur, and six other Indian cities. It was also released on DVD format later. The movie was reportedly financed by public donations from more than 10,000 people.


Veer Savarkar: The Man and His Legacy




Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was born on 28 May 1883 in Bhagur village in Maharashtra. He was influenced by his elder brother Ganesh Damodar Savarkar, who was a revolutionary and a nationalist. He joined the Abhinav Bharat Society, which aimed to overthrow British rule in India by armed rebellion. He also became a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which advocated for Hindu rights and interests. He was arrested in 1910 for his involvement in the assassination of Sir William Curzon Wyllie, a British official. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in Cellular Jail in Andaman Islands. He attempted to escape from custody twice but failed. He wrote several petitions to the British government for clemency, promising to renounce violence and support British interests in India. He was released in 1924 on condition that he would not participate in any political activities.


After his release, Savarkar resumed his political and social activities. He became the president of the Hindu Mahasabha in 1937. He propagated his concept of Hindutva, which he defined as "Hinduness" or "Hindu-ness".
